Metsä Kaskinen resumes pulp production after fire

Frauke Schmidt, 26 August 2024

Metsä Board’s Kaskinen pulp mill in Finland has restarted production following downtime due to a fire.

On 19 August a cable fire broke out on the pipe bridge between the power plant and the water utility, which was quickly extinguished. However, the fire caused a power failure in several departments of the mill. As a result, pulp production had to be temporarily stopped, a Metsä spokesperson told EUWID.

No one was injured in the fire, and production was resumed on 23 August. The production stop did not lead to bottlenecks in the supply to Metsä’s own FBB mills or in deliveries to external customer, the spokesperson added.

The Kaskinen mill has a capacity to produce up to 390,000 tpy of BCTMP, which is mainly used as the middle layer in FBB production. Part of the pulp produced is used for internal conversion, e.g. at Metsä Board’s Husum mill.
