International Paper invests in energy efficiency in Spain

17 December 2024

US paper and packaging company International Paper (IP) has launched a number of initiatives to decarbonise and optimise energy efficiency at its recycled corrugated case material mill in Madrid, Spain.

IP says these latest investments are part of its efforts to support customers on their path to sustainability and provide the low-carbon packaging materials they need.

International Paper and its local partner ENSO signed an agreement which will see the latter install and operate a state-of-the-art biomass boiler at the Fuenlabrada mill in Madrid. This project, which is slated to start up in 2025, will reportedly cut the paper mill’s carbon footprint in half.

Moreover, the company wants to increasingly meet its electricity demand from solar energy and other renewable sources. For example, a new solar power purchase agreement will cover 10 per cent of the electricity needed by the Madrid mill. This will also increase the share of renewables in the site’s energy mix to more than 30 per cent.

The IP Madrid mill is geared for a production of 400,000 tpy of recycled corrugated case material. The mill is part of International Paper's EMEA packaging business network, including two recycled corrugated case material mills and 23 box plants in France, Italy, Morocco, Portugal and Spain.
