UPM Fibres restructures pulp production in Finland

Frauke Schmidt, 26 August 2024

UPM Fibres is centralising its production operations in Finland under one top level organisation, forming the new Fibres Finland Operations.

As of 1 October 2024, UPM Fibres will consist of two production organisations: the existing Fibres Uruguay Operations and a new Fibres Finland Operations.

UPM has three pulp mills producing bleached hardwood and softwood kraft pulp in Finland: Kaukas (700,000 tpy), Kymi (870,000 tpy) and Pietarsaari (800,000 tpy). The Fibres Finland Operations will include the UPM Pulp operations in Finland as well as UPM Forest and UPM Timber.

UPM’s Fibres Uruguay Operations operates the Fray Bentos mill (1.3 million t of eucalyptus pulp) and the Paso de los Toros mill (2.1 million t of eucalyptus pulp).

As part of this organisational change, Petri Hakanen has been appointed Senior Vice President, Fibres Finland Operations, UPM Fibres as of 1 October 2024. Mr Hakanen will be a member of the UPM Fibres Management team.

He led the Uruguay Development Project from 2018 to 2023 and currently holds the role of Senior Vice President, Technology (CTO), for UPM. He will continue in this role until the end of 2024, in addition to his new role in UPM Fibres.
